Halftime shows…. Justin Timberlake pulling off Janet Jackson Shirt (awesome), Tom Petty shredding on the guitar (awesome), New Kids On the Block completely blowing it (whose brilliant idea was that? he’s fired)…. Lets face it, when the commercials are better than most horrendous halftime acts then there needs to be an alternative. So let me introduce to you… THE ANNUAL. There is nothing better than keeping a dispute to a school yard foot race. A 40 yard dash with you and your opponents, the beach, and amazing costumes. That’s it in a nutshell.
FIREHOUSE American Eatery + Lounge hosts one of the biggest block parties to the date. Equipped with an LED Jumbo-tron, Stadium bleacher seating, outdoor bars, drinking games and entertainment, and of course the Annual. Pulling in Guest Bartenders from Vin de Syrah and Analog, Pacific Beach is sure to have the wildest time this year.
To give everyone a better insight on the Annual, we sat down with one of the originators, Shane Dolan (of the Grand Artique), as he gives us the background of the outrageous event that will take place during halftime for this Super Bowl.
“12 years ago while seven pals were watching the Super Bowl, an argument flared on which one of them was the fastest guy at the party. As tempers arose and verbal bashing continued, the egos were to be put to the test and settled by a real halftime show, a foot race. Some of them stripped down, others ran barefoot, a few put on capes, and at the moment the ANNUAL was born. The word had spread throughout the crew. Year after year the annual gaining more steam, getting bigger and more outlandish each time. Sign ups from slow pokes in costumes to washed up track stars all claiming they are the fastest guy at the party. Every year during the Super Bowl we invite whomever, male or female, costumes or not, to participate in “the Annual” 40 yard dash to settle debates of whom may be the fastest man or woman at the party. If you think your quick please keep in mind this is not your average race you must deal with the elements: rain, wind, soft sand, water in your lane, booze in your blood, cheaters, costumes, false starts, bad jumps, bumps, and bruises… racing 3 to 4 times just to get to the finals!”
It’s truly amazing how such a random act has turned into such a character, costumed, carnival type event. This has literally gone from a living room showdown to a bells and whistles event with stadium bleachers, turf, LED jumbo-tron, Coors Light, Rockstar, Emerald City, Rubicon Deli sandwiches, Grand Artique, and SDCM sponsored block party. With no signs of slowing down, this event has passed through many backyards, parking lots, beaches, and block parties. To this date it will be establish as the biggest halftime footrace. Having portions of proceeds donated to SD Fireman’s Relief Association & Go Green for Education, this crew has been dedicated to creating something artistic, something more than another day at the bar, a true celebration to be remembered. The game will be on but chances are you will only remember what happened during halftime and who the victor of this year’s Annual will be.
